Integrating risk into major engineering decisions
Embedding risk thinking at key project gates for better, faster, more defensible decisions
Major capital projects more often fall short because of weak decisions under uncertainty than because of an incomplete risk register. A register records what could go wrong. On its own, it rarely changes what a board or project team decides to do.
I’ll show how to embed risk thinking at the investment, design, procurement and delivery gates — no specialist risk qualification required.
What the session covers
- Reporting vs deciding — why a complete register does not guarantee good decisions, and how to move from risk reporting to risk-based decision making
- Risk at the gates — practical prompts at business case, design freeze, contract award and change control
- Contingency and commercial outcomes — connecting contingency, residual risk and results without adding bureaucracy
- Speaking the board’s language — briefing executives for approval, not only compliance
- Lessons from practice — infrastructure, energy, hospitality and complex programmes, plus structured Q&A
Learning outcome
